This version is finished with arai-dashi, a traditional Japanese plastering technique in which small pebbles are mixed into the earth and polished during shaping, so they appear on the surface and sparkle as the angle changes. The technique also gives the dish high water resistance, so it can be used in the bath as well as by the sink.

Choose a circle or a square to suit your space; both absorb water equally well. The underside is shaped for good airflow. Natural, calm and clean-looking, it also makes a lovely gift.

About soil

soil was born from a collaboration between Isurugi, a plastering company in Kanazawa with more than 200 years of history, and the Tokyo design firm ASHCONCEPT. It turns diatomaceous earth, a classic Japanese wall material, into absorbent homewares. Diatomaceous earth is a natural material made from the fossilized shells of tiny plankton; it is full of microscopic pores, so it absorbs moisture quickly, releases it again and “breathes”. Each piece is made by hand by skilled plasterers, so there may be tiny individual differences, which do not affect quality.

Specifications

Circle: diameter 100 × height 15 mm (3.9 × 0.6 in), approx. 240 g

Square: 100 × 100 × 15 mm (3.9 × 3.9 × 0.6 in), approx. 165 g

Material: diatomaceous earth (arai-dashi finish)

Colors: White, Pink, Green, Blue

Made in Japan

Care

Let it dry thoroughly from time to time to keep it absorbent.

Diatomaceous earth can break.
