Unlike artists who focus solely on self-expression, Hosokawa proudly defines himself as a "Shokunin" (craftsman). His philosophy is simple yet profound: "To listen to what the user desires, and to use my skills to create a daily tool that fulfills that need." This dedication to "Yo-no-Bi" (the beauty of everyday utility) is woven into the very fabric of this clutch.

 

Mechanical Precision, Crafted Entirely by Hand

When people first see the flawless geometric patterns of this Ajiro-ami (herringbone) clutch, they often mistake it for a machine-made product. In truth, it is the exact opposite—the height of handcraftsmanship so refined that it transcends human error.

The most critical part of Hosokawa's work is not the weaving, but the preparation of the bamboo strips (Higo). Using premium, locally sourced Kyoto bamboo, he splits and shaves each strip down to the exact millimeter, relying on decades of sensory experience to adapt to the unique flexibility of each natural bamboo stalk. This meticulous process requires an immense amount of time and patience, which is why there is currently a half-year waiting list for his creations in Japan.

This clutch is treated with Fuki-urushi (wiped Japanese lacquer), a traditional technique where natural lacquer is repeatedly applied and wiped away by hand to enhance durability while beautifully preserving the organic grain and dye of the bamboo.

1. Water & Moisture

• Avoid Rain: Bamboo and natural silk are sensitive to moisture. Please avoid using the bag in heavy rain.

• If it gets wet: In case the bag gets wet, gently wipe it with a soft, dry cloth immediately and let it air-dry completely in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Do not use a hairdryer or expose it to direct sunlight, as rapid drying may cause the bamboo to warp or crack.

• Storage: When not in use, store the bag in a dry, well-ventilated place away from high humidity to prevent mold. Avoid storing it in sealed plastic bags for extended periods.

2. Daily Care & Cleaning

• No Special Oils Needed: You do not need to apply chemical oils or waxes. The traditional Japanese way to finish and maintain bamboo is simply through the natural oils from your hands (Te-abura) as you use it daily.

• Dusting: To clean dust from the intricate weaves, gently wipe along the grain with a dry, soft cloth, or use a soft-bristled brush.

3. Handling & Magnets

• Delicate Material: While natural bamboo is highly resilient and durable, please avoid applying excessive pressure, overloading the bag, or scraping it against sharp objects, which may scratch the delicate 2mm bamboo strips.

• Magnetic Clasp: The bag features a strong magnetic clasp attached to the handwoven Sanada-himo silk cord. When opening the bag, please support the base near the clasp gently rather than pulling forcefully on the silk cord itself, ensuring the longevity of the handwoven fabric.
