Dots and stripes, woven into the cloth

Is an umbrella just something to keep off the rain and sun? Makita Shoten’s kirie umbrellas do more: they flatter your face. Light passing through the woven fabric works like blush or highlighter, giving your complexion a soft glow and a sense of clarity. They are dual-use umbrellas for sun and rain.
Patterns calculated by a weaver
Makita Shoten, which makes kirie, is a textile house founded in 1866, and one of the very few makers that weaves its own umbrella fabric. Its weaving know-how goes into every canopy, calculated so that the pattern looks beautiful when the umbrella is opened. Photos can hardly do justice to the quality of the woven cloth; you will feel it the moment you hold it. Dots and stripes cover the whole canopy, never too loud: simple, yet stylish and charming.

Protection from UV and rain
On hot days the umbrella protects your skin from UV rays and your body from the sun’s heat; simply making your own shade lowers how hot you feel. With UV protection of 90% or more plus waterproof, water-repellent fabric, it is useful all year round. Compact when folded, it slips neatly into a bag, and comes with a cover in the same pattern as the umbrella.
A beautiful umbrella you can repair and keep for years, and a lovely gift for Mother’s Day or for anyone you want to thank.
About Makita Shoten
Makita Shoten is a textile house founded in 1866 in the Gunnai weaving region of Yamanashi. It may be the only company in Japan that weaves its own umbrella fabric and assembles the umbrellas in-house, from the cloth to the finished umbrella. Because their craftspeople know every part of an umbrella, Makita Shoten can repair everything: parts, fabric and water-repellent finish. Instead of throwing an umbrella away when it breaks, you can keep repairing it and enjoy it for life.
