Tenugui Parasol – Traditional Japanese Artisan Sun Umbrella
Experience the fusion of tradition and elegance.
A unique sun umbrella meticulously crafted from double-sided, reversible Japanese Tenugui cloth.

An unexpected yet beautiful pairing: the traditional Japanese hand towel (Tenugui) meets the modern sun umbrella. Craftsmanship brand hirali brings you a unique parasol, born from a desire to reimagine the potential of traditional cotton cloth in everyday life.
Key Features
The Beauty of Reversible Colors

Imagine a fabric so thin, yet dyed with completely different vibrant colors on each side. While ordinary printing can achieve two-sided designs, it stiffens the fabric. hirali uses a specialized master-dyeing technique that infuses the colors deeply into the fibers, maintaining the incredibly soft, breathable texture that Tenugui is loved for.
Inspired by Heian Era Aesthetics ("Kasane no Iromeme")

Japan’s changing seasons have long inspired a rich sense of color. This parasol draws inspiration from Kasane no Iromeme—the elegant art of layering contrasting colored silk robes worn by court nobles in the ancient Heian period. As you open the umbrella, you can enjoy one beautiful shade from the outside and another gentle hue from underneath.
Gentle Yet Durable: The "Wazashi" Tradition

Made using the Wazashi (traditional Japanese bleaching) process in Sakai, Osaka—a city renowned for its textile heritage since the Edo period. This method removes impurities without stressing the cotton fibers, resulting in a cloth that is exceptionally gentle to the touch, highly durable, and naturally breathable.
Sun Protection Meets Comfort
Complete with professional UV-cut processing, it offers excellent sun protection while keeping you comfortably cool underneath the breathable cotton canopy.
Design Variations
Each design is beautifully named after traditional seasonal words (Kigo) from Japanese poetry:
-
Kaze Hikaru (The Shining Spring Breeze)
Captures the essence of early spring, when the gentle breeze seems to sparkle and catch the warm sunlight. -
Yama Nemuru (The Sleeping Winter Mountain)

Inspired by the quiet, serene atmosphere of mountains blanketed in the calm of winter.
-
Yuki Arale (Snow Pellets / Soft Hail)

Features a delicate, rhythmic pattern inspired by crisp winter snow crystallizing in the cold air.
-
Koori Musubu (The Binding of Ice)

Reflects the poetic Japanese concept of winter’s touch "binding" or freezing water into beautiful sheets of clear ice.
