Hair care while you sleep

Sleeping on the Joshu Kinuya silk pillowcase

Dry, frizzy hair, bed head and flyaways that no amount of treatment or oil seems to fix: the cause may be friction against your pillow while you sleep. A silk pillowcase can help. The smooth surface of silk reduces friction, helping protect your hair from damage, breakage and dryness.

Joshu Kinuya’s pillowcases are made in Gunma, one of Japan’s great silk-producing regions, from 100% rare Japanese silk. They are carefully finished without chemicals, so they are gentle on your skin and hair.

The natural power of silk

  • Clean and fresh: silk is naturally antibacterial, and in tests at a Gunma prefectural research institute the fabric showed a 99.9% antibacterial effect. Silk’s long fibers also shed very little lint, so there is less house dust.
  • Comfortable all year: silk absorbs and releases moisture, feeling cool and dry in summer and soft and moist in winter.
  • Kind to hair and skin: sericin, a natural protein in silk, is rich in amino acids similar to those in hair, helping keep hair and skin from drying out.

Skeins of pure Japanese silk from Gunma

Silk made without shortcuts

Joshu Kinuya does everything in Japan, from choosing materials to processing. On its own grounds it raises silkworms of a Japanese variety called Gunma 200, fed only on Japanese mulberry leaves. Only about 0.15% of the raw silk sold in Japan is domestically produced, and Joshu Kinuya uses only pure Japanese silk grown in Gunma. The silkworms are raised with great care, adjusting to weather and temperature so that every cocoon grows evenly, and their silk has won top marks at competitions.

No formalin, preservatives or other chemicals commonly used in silk reeling are used. Besides being safe, this leaves more of the natural protein sericin in the silk.

Fits your own pillow

The cover ties on with ribbons, so it fits many pillow sizes. There is no need to stuff the pillow in, and it comes off easily for washing. Take it on trips, too: tie it onto the hotel pillow and enjoy your usual comfort. A thoughtful gift, or a treat for yourself.
