About Nousaku

Nousaku (能作) is a foundry founded in 1916 in Takaoka, Toyama, a city whose metal-casting tradition goes back some 400 years. It began by making Buddhist altar fittings and now uses the same casting skills to create tableware and interior pieces in brass and pure tin. Every design starts from the material itself, and each piece is finished by hand by Nousaku's craftspeople.

1. Pure tin guinomi

These guinomi (sake cups) are made of 100% tin, a metal with a surprisingly warm, familiar feel. Tin is said to purify water and make sake taste mellower, and because it conducts heat well, chilled sake stays cold. Tin does not rust, so the cups keep their beauty for years with no special care.

2. A lucky Mt. Fuji design

Mt. Fuji is a symbol of good fortune in Japan. Turn the cup upside down and it becomes a tin Mt. Fuji. Inside, a tiny Fuji rises from the bottom and appears as you finish your drink: a playful detail only casting can create.

3. A pair for gifting

One cup is plain tin; the other is lined with gold leaf. Choose a paper gift box or a paulownia wood box, the traditional Japanese box for special gifts.

Care

  • Tin is a soft metal. Avoid repeatedly applying force to the same spot.
  • Tin has a low melting point: do not use over a direct flame, in the microwave, dishwasher or dryer.
  • Do not put it in the freezer. Extreme cold can cause "tin pest" (discoloration and deformation).
  • Wash with a soft sponge and mild dish soap. Do not scrub with abrasive pads or cleanser.
  • If the shine dulls, polish it with metal polish, toothpaste or baking soda.

Nousaku

Takaoka, Toyama
