The Last Standing Master of His Craft

Today, it is said that only one artisan remains in Japan who possesses the skill to forge Nigiri-Basami (traditional thread snips) entirely by hand, from raw steel.

His name is Mr. Terasaki.

He is the sole apprentice of Mr. Mizuike, a legendary figure who almost single-handedly kept the art of hand-forged thread snips alive for a generation.

This is Mr. Mizuike.

Carrying forward the masterful techniques drilled into him by his mentor, Mr. Terasaki now sustains this dying art. Every single pair of shears born from his hands is a masterpiece—flawless in its cutting precision, immaculate in its form, and perfectly balanced in the hand. They are a finished, complete work of art.

Heading: Adding 1% to Perfection

The Banshu Hamono "101 Series" redefined the potential of Japanese cutlery by daring to add a single percentage to this historical perfection: "Perfection +1%."

The traditional silhouette of the classic thread snips remains completely untouched. Instead, a touch of modern design has been breathed into the tool through a minimalist, colored surface coat.

It is a subtle evolution, yet one that went unthought of throughout centuries of history. This innovation blossomed from the collaboration between the traditional craftsmen and Mr. Kobayashi, a designer and producer who brought an outsider’s visionary perspective.

Determined to introduce this heritage to the world as "BANSHU HAMONO," Mr. Kobayashi actively exhibits these pieces across Europe and the Americas. The day this name echoes globally is fast approaching.

A Heritage Passed Down Through Generations

The greatest joy of owning artisan-made cutlery is its ability to stand the test of time.

When the sharpness dulls, you sharpen it. The pristine edge revives instantly. This timeless cycle allows you to use the tool faithfully until the blade itself is completely spent. This is the original, authentic relationship between humans and their tools.

Caring for something you love and keeping it by your side for decades. Passing it down as a family heirloom to your children and grandchildren—there is a profound, sustainable beauty in that choice.

Please Note Regarding the Hand-Forged Finish:

Because these shears are authentically hand-forged, priority is given to maximizing their sharpness and structural strength. As a result, the inner side of the handles may retain a slightly raw, textured surface. Depending on the angle, this can sometimes look like an uneven paint coating; however, this is a natural characteristic of traditional hand-hammered craftsmanship and is not a product defect. We appreciate your understanding and hope you enjoy the unique character of this handmade piece.

■ The Difference Between "Riki" (Pre-formed Steel) and "Hand-Forged From Scratch"

Looking at the image below, you can see how the Nigiri-Basami (Japanese thread snips) gradually changes shape from right to left.

The term "Riki" (利器) indicates that the tool is made using Rikizai—pre-formed composite steel sheets that are already shaped to a certain extent. Because the manufacturing processes are entirely different, a direct comparison is difficult. However, to give you an idea using the image below, the "Riki" process skips the initial steps, with the artisan's hand-finishing work beginning roughly from the 4th or 5th shape from the left.

In contrast, a "Fully Hand-Forged" (鍛造手打ち) piece is crafted entirely by the artisan's hands, from the very first step to the absolute final touch. This requires significantly more time, labor, and master skill, which is reflected in its premium price.

The type of steel used for the blade also differs:

  • Riki: Made with standard Japanese Steel (SK5).

  • Hand-Forged: Made with premium Yasugi Yasuki Steel "Kigami" (Yellow Paper Steel).

While there is no drastic difference in initial sharpness or general ease of use, subtle distinctions emerge in the tactile sensation during cutting and how the tool ages over long-term use. Above all, the ultimate charm of a piece fully hand-forged from scratch by a single master artisan is truly unparalleled.

■ Packaging & Presentation

Your shears will arrive beautifully packaged in a traditional Japanese Paulownia wood box (Kiri-bako), lined with authentic Banshu Ori textile—a historic woven fabric originating from the exact same region as Banshu Hamono.

Please note that the pattern and color of the Banshu Ori fabric change periodically and are selected at random. We kindly ask for your understanding that specific design requests cannot be accommodated.
