A tumbler that settles into your hand

Two NAJIMI tin tumblers on a wooden table

About Nousaku

Nousaku (能作) is a foundry founded in 1916 in Takaoka, Toyama, a city whose metal-casting tradition goes back some 400 years. It began by making Buddhist altar fittings and now uses the same casting skills to create tableware and interior pieces in brass and pure tin. Every design starts from the material itself, and each piece is finished by hand by Nousaku's craftspeople.

1. Made to hold

Of all Nousaku's pieces, NAJIMI was designed with the most attention to grip. A hollow for the thumb lets this generously sized tumbler sit securely in the hand; najimi means "a familiar, comfortable fit." The wide mouth is ideal for whisky or shochu on the rocks.

2. Pure tin

Made of 100% tin, a metal with a surprisingly warm feel. Tin is said to purify water and make drinks taste mellower, and it conducts heat well, so cold drinks stay cold. Poured into tin, beer forms a fine, creamy head.

3. A pair for gifting

Soft drinks taste smoother too, so the set suits anyone, whether they drink alcohol or not. Choose a paper gift box or a paulownia wood box.

Care

  • Tin is a soft metal. Avoid repeatedly applying force to the same spot.
  • Tin has a low melting point: do not use over a direct flame, in the microwave, dishwasher or dryer.
  • Do not put it in the freezer. Extreme cold can cause "tin pest" (discoloration and deformation).
  • Wash with a soft sponge and mild dish soap. Do not scrub with abrasive pads or cleanser.
  • If the shine dulls, polish it with metal polish, toothpaste or baking soda.

The maker behind this piece

Nousaku

Takaoka, Toyama

Founded in 1916 in Takaoka, a town with 400 years of metal casting history, Nousaku began by making Buddhist altar fittings. Today it casts tin and brass into tableware, wind chimes and interior pieces, guided by one simple aim: to make better castings, and to make them well.
