A Business Card Holder with a Story

A sophisticated business card holder that catches the eye despite its simplicity. Unlike many leather card holders, this one is made using a weaving technique called "tsuzure-ori."

"Tsuzure-ori" (Tapestry Weaving)

You might not be familiar with this term. It may be easier to understand if I describe it as one of the techniques of Nishijin weaving. It's "a technique where the weft thread is passed diagonally and doubled up, weaving in a way that wraps the warp threads with weft threads so completely that the warp threads are not visible."

The history of tsuzure-ori, with its diagonally inserted weft threads that create this doubled-up effect, dates back to Egypt 4,000 years ago. The characteristics of tsuzure-ori lie in its "beauty" and "strength."

Adorning Festivals

Due to its beautiful patterns and strength, tsuzure-ori is used in decorative fabrics for festival floats in the Gion Festival.

For the decorative fabrics on festival floats, craftsmen file their fingernails to create ridges, and use a technique called "tsumegaki hon-tsuzure" where they use their nails as tools to create intricate beautiful patterns within the tsuzure-ori, drawing magnificent designs using only weft threads.

While fingernail techniques aren't used for the business card holder, its simplicity means there's no room for deception. The reasons for its beauty are hidden in the details – the type of thread, color, proportion of color areas, and how thread seams are concealed.

Strength Beyond Leather

While it uses the most orthodox plain weave, the weaving method completely envelops the warp threads with weft threads. There's also a commitment to the strength of the thread itself, using thicker silk threads.

As a result, tsuzure-ori is said to have up to five times the horizontal strength compared to genuine leather of equivalent thickness.

Traditional Japanese Colors

Envisioning business scenarios, this business card holder is deliberately designed with simplicity using pure tsuzure-ori. Instead of adding variation through patterns, the focus is on "color."

After many trials with numerous colors, eight traditional Japanese colors were carefully selected. Each has its own meaning, helping us discover the fascinating aspects of traditional Japanese colors.
