Trays that keep the sink and bathroom dry

soil trays on a windowsill with soap and a dispenser

Water from a wet sponge, a soap dispenser or toiletry bottles quickly leaves rings and grime around the sink. These diatomaceous earth trays absorb the water as soon as it drips, keeping surfaces dry and clean. Choose the size that fits what you want to place on it:

  • Sponge Tray (13 × 8 cm): for a kitchen sponge or a bar of soap
  • Dispenser Tray (24 × 8 cm): for a soap or detergent dispenser, or a few bottles in a row
  • Amenity Tray (24 × 16 cm): for toiletries, cosmetics and other bathroom essentials

Finished with the arai-dashi plastering technique, with small pebbles that appear on the surface and catch the light, the trays are water-resistant and suit both kitchens and bathrooms. Four soft colors: White, Pink, Green and Blue.

About soil

soil was born from a collaboration between Isurugi, a plastering company in Kanazawa with more than 200 years of history, and the Tokyo design firm ASHCONCEPT. It turns diatomaceous earth, a classic Japanese wall material, into absorbent homewares. Diatomaceous earth is a natural material made from the fossilized shells of tiny plankton; it is full of microscopic pores, so it absorbs moisture quickly, releases it again and “breathes”. Each piece is made by hand by skilled plasterers, so there may be tiny individual differences, which do not affect quality.

Specifications

  • Sponge Tray: approx. 13 × 8 cm (5.1 × 3.1 in)
  • Dispenser Tray: approx. 24 × 8 cm (9.4 × 3.1 in)
  • Amenity Tray: approx. 24 × 16 cm (9.4 × 6.3 in)
  • Material: diatomaceous earth (arai-dashi finish)
  • Made in Japan

Care

  • Let it dry thoroughly from time to time to keep it absorbent.
  • Diatomaceous earth can break. Do not drop it or subject it to strong impact.
  • A small amount of fine powder may come off; this is natural for the material and not a defect.
  • Colors may change slightly with use; this does not affect performance.
